BACK GROUND Dawn is 'The Key', a collection of
energy transformed into human form by the monks of the Order of Dagon. The
monks placed The Key in the care of the Summers and also implanted fake
memories into their minds as well as everyone related to them making it seem
that Dawn was Buffy's younger sister and that she was always a part of the
Summers family. They did this in order to prevent The Key from falling into the
hands of the evil hell-goddess Glory. Eventually, Buffy and Joyce discovered
the truth and tried to hide it from Dawn but in vain, as Dawn discovers her
real identity when she read Giles' diary.
Though Dawn was hurt by the revelation, more
pressing issues came to light when Glory acquired Dawn and performed a ritual
to make the Key open the doorway to her own dimension. This ritual had the
power to destroy all dimensional barriers, unleashing all kinds of demons into
the Buffy's world. The ritual would also destroy Dawn. To stop the ritual,
Buffy sacrificed her own life in order to save that of Dawn's and the other
people in her world whom she loved so much.
Soon after her death, the Slayer was
resurrected back to life by
When The First Evil resurfaced on earth and
threatened to open the Sunnydale Hellmouth and destroy the world, Giles and the
Watcher's Council sent Potentials(inactivated slayers) to Sunnydale so that
they could be trained by Buffy to face the near Apocalypse. The Scoobies had
always speculated that someday, Dawn would replace Buffy's place as the
Dawn supported Buffy and the Potentials in
their preparation for the final battle. She grew close to Andrew(the last of
the geeky triumvirate) and Amanda, (a Potential who would die in the battle
against the hordes that came out of the hellmouth when it opened).
After Sunnydale was destroyed due to the
sealing of the hellmouth below it, Buffy and the Scoobies were left homeless
and then relocated to
When another apocalypse threatened to hit Angel
and his team in LA, Buffy took
Dawn, (having had enough of her over-protective
sister keeping things from her and choosing to keep her out of the war against
Wolfram and Hart), arrived in LA with a raging temper after she discovered what
was going on from a very reluctant Giles.
But Dawn immediately sobered down when she
reached the Hyperion and saw the state of her sister and the other slayers.
However, Dawn forced Buffy to let her stay with
her and play an active part in the fight against the Senior Partners.
PYSCHOLOGICAL PROFILE Dawn has shown a vast
array of psychological traits during the short time she has spent with Buffy
and the Scoobies. At first, she was a normal happy-go-lucky girl but when she
discovered the secret of her real identity and the fact that Buffy and Joyce
knew about this but still chose to keep her in the dark, Dawn's life turned
upside down. Disgusted with her foster family and herself, Dawn, overcome with
adolescent angst inflicted wounds on her arm with a knife. However, Buffy
promised her that she would always treat her like a real sister in the future
and this soothed Dawn's soul.
When Buffy sacrificed her life to stop Glory's
ritual from taking place, Dawn went into depression over the fact that she was
the main reason her sister gave away her life for.
When
The post-resurrection Buffy was somehow
detached and distant from everything around her, including Dawn. Facing partial
abandonment, Dawn resorted to kleptomania as an outlet for all her misery. When
this problem came to light, Buffy once again came to her younger sister's
rescue by just listening to what she had to say and then always being there by
her side after that.
Dawn felt slightly rejected when she discovered
that she wasn't a potential slayer, as that was what the rest of the Scoobies
had thought to be, but when Xander told her and it was alright to be the
'quintessential average side-man', Dawn quickly got over herself.
Dawn lost a lot of people in her life, people she cared for like her foster mother
Joyce, her close friend Tara, her sister Buffy(for some time) and most recently
her new best friend Amanda. When Tara was killed, Dawn felt a seething emotion
of vengeance in herself, she wished ill for Tara's killer, but when she saw how
this vengeance had affected Willow and how it was slowly destroying her(Willow
threatened to destroy Dawn's human form), Dawn immediately mellowed down.
The First Evil tried to instigate Dawn against
Buffy when it appeared to her in the form of Joyce. Dawn was left confused by
this bizarre incident but never left her trust for elder sister.
Dawn hates the fact that Buffy being such an
independent and strong woman herself, treats her younger sister as a child. She
was especially angered when Buffy had arranged for Dawn's departure from Sunnydale ahead of the
apocalypse. Now that she is almost 18, Dawn would once and for all like to show
Buffy that she is extremely capable of taking care of herself, thank you very
much!
TRAINING OR EDUCATION
Dawn briefly studied in the newly rebuilt
Sunnydale High School. After the apocalypse however, Dawn was unable to
continue with her studies. Maybe destiny has something else in store for her?
